November Breakfast Meeting
Speaker: WWII Veteran Ken Axelson
Date: Saturday, November 10
Time: 8:30 a.m.
In appreciation for Veteran’s Day, WW II Veteran Ken Axelson of Wanamingo, Minnesota, will share his experiences as a soldier in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge in the forested region of northeast France and captured by the Germans as a prisoner of war until the end of the war. The event is hosted by Metro Republican Women at their November 10 breakfast meeting at the Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights.
“This courageous soldier will give us a sense of the challenges that our country faced in WW II,” said MRW President Margaret Flower. “Ken Axelson will help us understand the challenge and determination this generation of soldiers had when fighting for freedom and American values.”
The two battle fields of WW II, Omaha Beach with the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and Battle of the Bulge, the last German offensive of the war, are well known for the huge loss of life as Americans courageously entered into WW II to stop the German takeover of Europe. Axelson survived both battlefields only to be captured and put into a German Prisoner of War camp until the end of the war. At 93, he enthusiastically tells his story in the recognition that few of his fellow soldiers are alive to do so.
The meeting will be held at the Mendakota Country Club. The buffet breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. and program begins at 9:00 a.m. The cost is $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $15 for students. With no reservations by the deadline, the cost is $25. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged.
Those interested in attending can pay online or simply make a reservation and pay at the door. Reservations for lower price needed by Tuesday, November 6.
