June 8 – Dr. Sylvia Sekhon
July – MRW Family Picnic (TBD)

June Meeting

Speaker: Dr. Sylvia Sekhon
Date: Saturday, June 8, 2019
Topic: Early Brain Development, Insults and Enhancements

Pediatrician and educator, Dr. Sylvia Sekhon will present the nature of early brain development and focus on the importance of reading to babies, even pre-birth, to expand vocabulary prior to entering school. She presents at the June 8 meeting of Metro Republican Women at Mendakota Country Club.  All are asked to bring a children’s book for families in need.

“Brain development is an important topic for every parent and grandparent,” asks MRW President Margaret Flower. “Reading to the child especially fosters the love of words, it also creates a special bond between the adult and child.”

Dr. Sekhon is a practicing physician in St. Paul; and an adjunct assistant professor, University of Minnesota Medical School.  She is an active advocate for children and finds that the accumulative and recent brain research of children, ages 0 to 5, is “eye-opening” to what enables K-12 youth to soar, or not, in their academic and social-emotional development in their K-12 years and beyond.  She is frequently presenting to Rotary groups with Dr. Don Draayer, the former Minnetonka superintendent of schools for 24 years.

The meeting will be held at the Mendakota Country Club. The buffet breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m. and program begins at 9:00 a.m. The cost is $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $15 for students. With no reservations by the deadline, the cost is $30. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged.

Those interested in attending can pay online or simply make a reservation and pay at the door. For the lower price, make reservations by Tuesday, June 4.
